Swedish support to the World Food Program's climate risk insurance scheme offers payouts to more than 25,000 Somali households to help them deal with the effects of the drought.
More than 220,000 livestock have died as a result of the drought in southern Ethiopia, resulting in food shortages and displacement.
Despite the prevalence of the problem in Somali and Oromia regions, the government also providing food, water and fodder support to victims.
“In the interim, we will scale the provision of water trucks, food, animal feed and essential medicines, while we accelerate the small dams projects we have embarked upon to support water management in lowland areas, as a pathway to circumventing future droughts,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed tweeted last week after he visited drought affected areas in Somali region.
