U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin J. Massinga expressed that his country would continue advocating for peaceful resolution of conflict through dialogue and negotiation between all parties to secure the safety of all Ethiopians.

The Ambassador issued a letter disseminated to the people of Ethiopia on 29 January, 2024 in line with the 120 years anniversary of the people-to-people relations between the two nations.

He stated in the letter that peace must prevail in Ethiopia whether in Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, the south, or elsewhere.

“Good friends are honest with each other, and a troubling human rights situation and shrinking civic space are areas where we hope to partner with Ethiopia to achieve marked improvement,” he wrote.

To further these objectives, the Ambassador expressed that the U.S. would work with Ethiopia to modernize the court system and facilitate justice reform to enhance rule of law and better serve the people.

Massinga added that his country will continue to encourage full implementation of the November 2, 2022, Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) that had been signed between the federal government and the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF).

According to the Ambassador, the CoHA has silenced guns in Tigray and enabled many to return to school and work.

The United States supported consultations to help implement a credible, inclusive, and meaningful transitional justice process, Ambassador Massinga mentioned.
