EHRC says over 80 people killed in Amhara region of Ethiopia

More than 80 civilians have been killed in Amhara region of northwest Ethiopia for the ongoing conflict between the Ethiopian federal forces and Amhara people local militia, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRC) disclosed.

The over 80 civilians that have no direct involvement in the ongoing conflict were killed in Merawi town of the West Gojjam Zone of the Amhara region on 29 January 2024, the council said.

On that day, transport has been interrupted because of the conflict and several human right violations including killings, tortures and other physical and psychological assaults inflicted on civilians, the EHRC’s report published on Tuesday indicated.

The incident was accentuated by heavy gun fires and armed forces operated ‘targeted’ young people going door to door, the report states. It says eye witnesses told the council that a mass burial was held the next day at Marian Church which evoked many to leave the town.

Despite the expansion of such incidents, the EHRC said the recent extension of the state of emergency in the Amhara region would exacerbate the situation.

The council also called on all warring parties to pursue peaceful means in order to save lives.
