Ethiopia and UK sign security agreement amid escalating tension in the horn

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country has signed MOU with the United Kingdom on Friday to enhance peace and stability in the Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia border areas amid the growing tension in the region.

The according to the ministry, the MOU aimed at boosting the resilience of communities across the Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia borders to the drivers of violent extremism.

Ambassador Jemaludin, Deputy DG of the Africa Department and the British Ambassador to Ethiopia Darren Welch inked the MOU, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two sides expressed their commitment to working together to reduce the threat posed by Al-Shabaab in the region.

The horn of Africa region is facing escalating tension in recent times especially after the seaport deal reached between Ethiopia and Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland.

Ethiopia has been reiterating that the deal wouldn’t affect any country rather than promoting peace and stability in the region.

Somalia on the other hand is denouncing the deal noting that it dangers its sovereignty. The country is also busy these days garnering support against the deal in which it gets positive reaction from Egypt and Türkiye.
