Ethiopia suspends 50% power supply to Sudan for delayed payment

Ethiopia suspended 50% of its power supply to Sudan as the later failed to make payments on time owing to political instability.

Ethiopia which is the major power exporter in the region, said it couldn’t receive its $70 million revenue from Sudan for the electric power it has exported in 2023.

As a result, the country is forced to suspend half of the electric power supply until Sudan become able to settle up with the aforementioned amount of delayed payment, according to the Ethiopian Electric Power.

However, the state-owned electric producer didn’t hide that the measure has reduced its half year performance in terms of revenue.

The issues with Sudan plus the decreasing power importation among Djibouti and Kenya has affected the income designed to be secured in six months, the company indicated.

It achieved only less than $48 million of the planned $66.2 million revenues arranged to be made from eight million MW electric power export.
