Ethiopian parliament extends state of emergency in Amhara region

The Ethiopian parliament on Friday extended the state of emergency it has declared in Amhara region of northern Ethiopia to annihilate rebels that ended up with a wide humanitarian crisis.

The house approved the extension of the state of emergency for additional four months by a majority vote with two votes against and three abstentions.

Despite a widespread accuse on the federal government regarding humanitarian abuse, Minister of Justice, Gedion Timotheos told the members of the parliament that the state of emergency has saved the Amhara Region from distraction.

The conflict between the federal government and the Amhara militias called Fano was erupted last July following the government unscrupulous and speedy measure to disarmament the gunmen up on its agreement with TPLF in November 2022 after the two-year-long war took the lives of many.

Applying its unrestricted power bestowed by the state of emergency, the government reportedly killed many young people moving door to door.

Dozens of civilians had been also killed by drone attacks, according to the Ethiopian Human Right Commission.
