Turkiye and Somalia have signed a military cooperation amid the growing tension in the horn of Africa following Ethiopia’s sea access agreement with Somalia’s de-facto region of Somaliland.
The Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement was signed on Thursday between Turkiye’s Defense Minister Yasar Guler and his Somali counterpart, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur.
Nur said in a presser that the agreement involves collaboration on the fight against terrorism and military-financial cooperation.
Turkiye’s Defense Minister Yasar Guler said his country is devoted to provide support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He said: “Somalia is an important partner of Turkey in Africa.”
Somalia has been garnering support to counter act Ethiopia’s consent to recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland in return to port access based on the deal that was inked on the first of January.
Turkiye has made clear its position standing by Somalia in support of the territorial integrity of the east African country.
