UN says severe drought raises food insecurity in Ethiopia

The United Nations announced that severe drought ravaged communities in Afar, Amhara, Tigray and Oromia regions, as well as the Southern and South West Ethiopia.

In its report published on 2 February 2024, UN said that extreme water shortages, dried pastures and reduced harvests are impacting millions of people causing food insecurity and rising malnutrition and affecting livestock.

The organization’s report indicated that people who affected by the two-year conflict in Tigray, are the main victims of the drought.

The UN also announced that over six million people are receiving food and cash across affected areas though there is a huge gap to reach for more.

The report indicated that the number of people who are in need of immediate food aid continues to grow over the next few months, reaching a peak of 10.8 million during the lean season from July through September.

“Malnutrition rates in parts of Afar, Amhara and Tigray and other regions have already surpassed globally recognized crisis thresholds, but currently do not reflect famine-like conditions,” it notes.

UN also cites its Agency, OCHA, saying “While the situation in many of these areas is already alarming, there is an opportunity to avert a serious humanitarian catastrophe through additional funding to urgently scale up and sustain response efforts.”
