Ethiopia set to launch sexual abuse registration while joining CSW

Ethiopia is getting things ready to launch its first-ever sexual violence registration system next year aimed at combating and addressing sexual violence against women and children.

The 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey shows that about 10% of women aged between 15 and 49 had experienced sexual violence, whereas 23% sustained physical assault, however, data indicates that only a quarter of these survivors seek help.

There is less tendency of reporting sexual violence for victim-blaming and societal stigma, perpetuated by various entities including authorities, healthcare professionals, as well as friends and family members.

Reports say that the forthcoming register will prohibit registered sex offenders from employment in educational institutions, orphanages, and other facilities catering to children.

The proposed national sex transgression registry is expected to include a public page, providing transparency and accountability.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia has become member of UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), that promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide..

The country’s membership lasts for four years from the first meeting of the Commission’s seventieth session in 2025 to the closing of its seventy-third session in 2029, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
