African Union Commission Chairperson High Representative to the Horn of Africa (HoA) Olusegun Obasanjo said neither military solution nor battle victory help to curb political problem in Northern Ethiopia.
The main point of difference between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the actors involving in the war that has been undertaking for a year now, is in the means by which they seek to achieve this essential objective, he said.
He stated in a Press Release on Sunday that he notes the recent statement by the Federal Government of Ethiopia on 11th November 2021 on the conditions and preference for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict with the TPLF.
He recalled the TPLF was also presented its prioritized conditions about political solutions when Obasanjo was in Mekelle to discuss the matter.
“I am optimistic that common ground towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict can be secured. The interlocutors I have engaged on all sides have stated their wish for peace, security, and stability in Ethiopia.”
War represents a failure of politics. Thus dialogue remains the only reliable and sustainable avenue to peace. There is no military solution to the conflict and battlefield victory cannot guarantee political stability in Ethiopia, the High Representative emphasized.
He appealed both actors engaged in the war to halt their military offensives. This will allow an opportunity for dialogue to continue to progress, he believed.
