Ethiopia garnering public opinion to get legitimate National Dialogue Commission

On Tuesday, the House of People’s Representatives announced that it has set to receive public opinion on the establishment of the commission.

House Speaker Tagese Chafo noted that garnering public opinion on the formation of the commission is vital to avail legitimacy among the people.

This National Dialogue Commission is envisaged to be an independent democratic institution with reporting lines to the Parliament and acting with an independent mandate to bridge differences and chart an inclusive way forward for national consensus.

The commission will contribute for national understanding by identifying agenda items and participants, convening dialogue platforms, crafting implementation processes for recommendations and follow-up, according to PMO Press Secretary Billene Seyoum.

The national dialogue believed to be an important scheme to solve political discords that have been expanding gaps between political elites.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Redwan Hussien  detailed the proposed plans to have an all-inclusive dialogue with political elites and the public.

He said almost all contentious matters would be on the table during the dialogue, including fundamental national issues and constitutional amendments.
