He said he has cancelled overseas visit including “a very important summit of African leaders – to rush back to UN headquarters.”
Speaking the media on Tuesday, the Secretary General expressed that he is deeply troubled by the latest developments regarding escalation of tensions between UkraineUkraine and Russia.
“I am especially concerned for the safety and wellbeing of all those who have already suffered from so much death, destruction and displacement,” he said.
He also described Russia's decision to recognize “independence” of certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
“It is also a death blow to the Minsk Agreements endorsed by the Security Council,” he remarked.
The United Nations, in line with the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, stands fully behind the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders, according to the Secretary General.
He also called on all parties for immediate ceasefire and the re-establishment of the rule of law.
It is high time to return to the path of dialogue and negotiations, Guterres stated.
“We must rally and meet this challenge together for peace, and to save the people of Ukraine and beyond from the scourge of war,” he said.
He also stressed that United Nations and the entire international system are being tested these days and they must pass this test.
