Ethiopian gov’t supplies 1.3 mln quintals of food to 6.6 mln destitute

The Ethiopian National Disaster Risk Management Commission announced that it has only provided 1.3 million quintals of food to the country’s 6.6 million destitute in six months.

The Commission also accused international humanitarian agencies of not supplying the required amount of support.

In an interview with the national news agency, Commissioner Shiferahu Teklemariam said the federal government provided 70 percent of the 1.3 million quintals of food aid supplied to the needy in the aforementioned period without elaborating the adequacy of the aid and situation of the needy who are victims of drought, conflict and so on.

He stressed that the current humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia cannot be labeled as famine rather than drought.

On Saturday, UN had announced that malnutrition rates in parts of Afar, Amhara and Tigray and other regions have already surpassed globally recognized crisis thresholds, but currently do not reflect famine-like conditions.

UN also cites its Agency, OCHA, saying “While the situation in many of these areas is already alarming, there is an opportunity to avert a serious humanitarian catastrophe through additional funding to urgently scale up and sustain response efforts,” Sheger Hours reported.
