More than 65 civilians have been killed by the government troops last month in west Gojjam zone of Amhara region, expressed the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
The government affiliated human right group announced on Tuesday that the civilians were killed in door-to-door raids by Ethiopian in the northern town of Merawi, west Gojjam zone of Ethiopia’s Amhara region.
Merawi residents describe several hours of fierce fighting on 29 January between the army and Fano fighters (the local militias), in a door-to-door raid by government security officers.
Last week, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council had announced that more than 80 civilians that have no direct involvement in the ongoing conflict were killed in Merawi town.
The US and EU have been also calling for an independent investigation and accountability on the issue.
The humanitarian crisis in Amhara region was began aftermath of the Tigray war that was concluded by the Pretoria peace agreement that was signed in November 2022 between the federal government and TPLF disregarding the interests of the Amhara forces who were on the side of the government in the two-year war.
After a peace deal, the Ethiopian federal government had announced that Fano and other militias would be disarmed. However, the Fano rebels do not want their forces to be disbanded because they fear it would leave them exposed to attacks from neighboring regions. That was the starting point to the current human right violation in Amhara region.
