Ethiopia to get nuclear science and technology centre

Ethiopia’s Innovation and Technology Minister Belete Molla expressed that his country is working in cooperation with a Russian nuclear company to build a nuclear science and technology research centre.

Belete told MPs on Tuesday that things are getting ready to construct the centre up on the completion of the feasibility study.

The country has been working on the advancement of the nuclear technologies and it recently has launched satellites into space with the support of China.

The minister also mentioned setbacks regarding legal frameworks that need to be revised and approved to resolve the existing problems in the area.

The country has been working to facilitate preconditions to develop and use nuclear energy for medical applications, electric power generation and agricultural development. To achieve this goal, Ethiopia has signed cooperation agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency and successful countries like Russia, China and the Republic of Korea.

Ethiopia also established a centre of excellence for nuclear science and technology at the Addis Ababa Science and Technology University to nurture citizens with undergraduate and post graduate programs in nuclear engineering and related disciplines.
