Africa needs $345 billion worth trucks to implement AfCFTA : UNECA

 


A study unveiled by United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on the 5th African Business Forum stated that the 55 member states of the African Union (AU) should have 2.2 million trucks for the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Constricting infrastructures is crucial to realize the AfCFTA that aimed at increasing 50 percent of trade among AU member states and total GDP by $2.5 trillion, UNECA stated.

It is a must to facilitate transport services so as to realize the free trade area agreement,  UNECA Executive Secretary  Vera Songwe noted.

She further stated that 169,339 train wagons, 136 ships and 243 planes are needed in addition to the 2.2 million trucks at a cost of $411 billion.

The Forum also underlined on the necessity of establishing continental airline and payment system to ramp up the application of the free trade agreement.
